The Nankin Township Historical Society

Detroit Free Press , June 30, 1905 Being anti-spanking and very much pro-cookie I felt that this was somewhat historical though not something that you'd likely see in a book concerning Nankin farmers. In this newspaper clipping from 1905 we learn that Nankin farmer John Rieman (or Nieman) was arrested for beating his 12-year-old son for stealing a cookie. The irony of the story is that the boy's friend had taken it and the son was merely protecting his friend's honor and paid the price for it. Rieman, of Wayne (yes, Wayne was located within Nankin Twp), was fined $10. Detroit Free Press , July 2, 1905

Here's a shoddily pieced together scan of a partial calendar from 1905 by the Detroit Journal . A newspaper that I had never heard of before finding this lone card stock poster at a Farmington estate sale the other day.

Bear with me my excesses because at heart I am an ascetic. Just as some universities and institutions specialize in certain fields that have no pertinent connection to their curriculum at large so will I on a lesser scale of intelligence and breadth. Such is my passion for bookplates. Despite My Poor Relations having an illustrated cover and being from 1905 those are its only saving graces. The words are twaddle and its readership is even lighter in sheer mass. So I cling to the comfort of its bookplate. That being from The Tabard Inn Library which was a commercial for-profit enterprise that apparently lent out books. Ten thousand revolving bookcases were placed in various drug stores, hotels and even public libraries and rented for 5 cents each after an initial lifetime membership of $3 was purchased, though my ex-libris plate says $1.50.
